Sherlock Holmes was by all accounts born on 6th January 1854, and for more than a century his name has been known in every country of the world; and not only his name, but his appearance too. The hawk-like features and piercing eyes; the dressing-gown and pipe; the deerstalker cap and magnifying glass - these details are so familiar that if he were to appear amongst us today we should know him at once.
He is still however an enigmatic figure, as wrapped in mystery as the crimes he tried to solve, and as in most legends, it is often difficult to separate fact from fiction.

In sostanza si dice che è universalmente noto che Sherlock sia nato il 6 gennaio 1854 (ricordavo bene xD) e che il suo nome è stato conosciuto per più di un secolo in tutto il mondo. I dettagli che lo caratterizzano (deerstalker, pipa, occhi penetranti) sono così familiari che potremmo tranquillamente riconoscerlo se ce lo trovassimo davanti!
Infine, sempre riassumendo, dice che la sua figura è sempre stata enigmatica, come i crimini che spesso risolve, e che, come nella maggior parte delle leggende, spesso è difficile separare la realtà dalla finzione
Alcuni londinesi, aggiungo io, sono peraltro fermamente convinti che Sherlock sia realmente esistito: c'è chi sostiene anche che Arthur Conan Doyle non fosse altro che lo pseudonimo del dottor Watson!
